In her June 14 book If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, and Healing, Kathleen Buhle recounts how she discovered that her then-husband, the president's son Hunter Biden, was having an affair with Hallie, Beau's widow.
According to People, Buhle and Biden's daughter Finnegan called Buhle to Debbie's house, the family's therapist, to help her children understand their uncle's brain cancer and their father's drinking.
Finny asked, "Debbie, can you tell her?" "We can't," she writes. “Debbie calmly said, ‘Kathleen, Hunter’s having an affair with Hallie.’”
Finnegan replied, “We found his phone,” and Naomi added, “There were text messages between them.” The therapist warned Buhle, "From now on, Kathleen, no more secrets," after calling Biden to inform him of the texts. I told the girls you will tell them the truth from now on.”
The 53-year-old nonprofit executive divorced Biden in 2017. Her memoir recounts how Biden's alcoholism, financial problems, and affair with his sister-in-law after his brother's brain cancer death weakened their marriage.
"I have forgiven him," she told People. I hurt from anger. I had several difficult experiences. I wanted to let go of that when I divorced.” Last year, Biden wrote about their divorce in Beautiful Things, his memoir.
He said that Buhle found his text messages with Hallie, unlike his ex-wife. He called the romance “mutually desperate grasping for love we both had lost, and its dissolution only deepened that tragedy.”
Buhle told People, “When my marriage ended, I felt like I’d lost my sense of who I was. Addiction, infidelity, and divorce are heartbreaking. Those shattering experiences also taught me that I needed to stand on my own.”
