Many fans were divided by Jewel's unconventional performance of the US national anthem during this year's Indianapolis 500.
The singer-songwriter performed an acoustic rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday (May 28).
Jewel, dressed all in white with a checkered flag tucked beneath her cowboy hat, slowly picked away at her guitar while crooning a soulful reworked rendition of the popular song.
In late February, the Utah native performed a similar rendition of the national anthem prior to the 2023 NBA All-Star Game in Salt Lake City.
Onlookers on social media had different feelings about Jewel's "Star Spangled Banner" performance at the Indy 500.
"Jewel messed up the national anthem at the Indianapolis 500." People tried to sing along, but they couldn't because of how she sung it. "What a shame," one Twitter user said.
"Jewel's national anthem for the Indianapolis 500 might be the worst anthem rendition to date," said another.
Others, on the other hand, appreciated the performance. "Jewel just did the best national anthem I've ever heard in my life, and I'm not exaggerating," one spectator wrote on Twitter.
